rom approximately 2,789 miles away, Nina Dobrev poses a question about the universe. “Do you believe in Mercury in retrograde?” she asked by way of introduction as her face materialized over our Skype connection. “In the five minutes that I was late, I spilled a cup of water on my floor, the new dog that I just rescued peed and pooed, I fell, and I got a parking ticket. Little things just keep going wrong. And dude, [retrograde] just started last week.”

Our cyber hangout was taking place on an afternoon in late November, so by the time you’re reading this, fear not: Mercury is officially out of retrograde, and Dobrev’s bout of bad luck is long over. In fact, it’s a whole new year, and one that’s shaping up to be a rather major—and good-fortuned—one for the actress. In fact, if we’re going off planetary influence, take her horoscope reading for the year as proof: “Twenty-nineteen will bring you good energy, as you move into a space where your career can flourish in ways you’ve been building toward for years.” That’s more like it.

Related’Daughters Of The Sexual Revolution’, ‘Of Fathers And Sons’ Among Four Documentaries Acquired By Starz
Written and executive produced by Cutter, Hightown is a crime drama set amid the drug trade on Cape Cod, touched off when a body washes ashore and discovered by an irreverent National Marine Fisheries Service officer, Jackie Quinones (Raymund), who is determined to help solve the murder even if the state cops want her nowhere near the case.

Voelkel will play Renee Shaw. Born and raised on the Cape, she’s a survivor who has been shaped to believe relationships are transactional. Caustic at times, she keeps up an emotional wall only penetrable by her five-year-old son. The child is a product of her ongoing with relationship with Frankie, the biggest drug dealer on the Cape, who is currently serving time, which puts pressure on her from the police, leading her into a developing relationship with Detective Ray Abruzzo (Dale). She keeps her friends close and enemies closer.

Gary Lennon will executive produce with Jerry Bruckheimer, Jonathan Littman and KristieAnne Reed from JBTV.

Voelkel, who played Freya Mikaelson on The Originals, recently wrapped a recurring role on Roswell, New Mexico. Her additional credits include The Newsroom for HBO, FX’s American Horror Story and Fox’s Glee. She’s repped by Abrams Artists Agency and managed by Luber Roklin.

So far several The Vampire Diaries veterans like Matt Donovan (Zach Roerig), Jeremy Gilbert (Steven R. McQueen) and Jo Laughlin (Jodi Lyn O’Keefe) have swung by Legacies — and that’s just in the first seven episodes! It’s probably safe to say we’ll get even more over the course of the series, but the guest star at the top of TV Guide’s wish list is the wonderfully wicked Kai Parker (Chris Wood).

On The Vampire Diaries, Kai was Jo’s twin brother, who found himself locked in a 1994 prison world with Bonnie (Kat Graham) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) after he tried to murder his whole family. In case you couldn’t tell, this guy’s a villain. When The Vampire Diaries ended, Kai wound up locked in another prison world, which is where we assume he’s been rotting for the past decade or so. Whether or not he’ll stay there forever? That’s up to showrunner Julie Plec and her powers of persuasion.

“I have big plans for [Kai’s return] in my head. Even if they never make it to the screen, I have massive plans,” Plec recently told TV Guide.

    Massive plans? Want! Want! Want!

How and when Kai will ever return depends on Chris Wood being ready and willing to make an appearance and whether that appearance properly serves the story, but if Plec can lock down that first part, the second seems pretty easy.

Given that Legacies planted the first seed of a Gemini storyline sure to come, it seems like the show could organically create the perfect opportunity for Kai to pop in. Lizzie (Jenny Boyd) and Josie (Kaylee Bryant) are actually Kai’s nieces, and the only surviving members of the Gemini Coven, a family of siphoner witches who have some gruesome customs when it comes to twins. So far, Josie and Lizzie don’t know about that particular part of their family history, but it only stand to reason that they’ll discover it one day. When and if that storyline comes into play, it could surely provide ample opportunity for a visit from Kai.

For now, don’t get your hopes up too high since Plec did warn that there are currently no plans to make Kai’s return happen. We’ll just have to wait patiently to see where the Gemini storyline takes us, and in the meantime we can speculate non-stop about what these “massive” plans Plec has for Kai could be.

Legacies returns Thursday, Jan. 24 at 9/8c on The CW.
