After months of anxious speculation, Nina Dobrev on Thursday confirmed that Vampire Diaries fans have not seen the last of her.

Just as she did with her initial departure, the actress announced her return via Instagram:

    I know it's Thursday, but this is not a TBT. #BackOnSet #TVDForever

“I’m thrilled to bring this show to an end the way we always intended — with Nina back to help us say goodbye,” executive producer Julie Plec said in a statement. Adds fellow EP Kevin Williamson, “I’m so excited to have Nina back to ensure our farewell episode is truly epic!”

Though Dobrev has been seen fairly regularly throughout this final season (via flashbacks), she hasn’t filmed any new scenes since wrapping Season 6 in 2015. She did, however, record fresh audio for the Season 7 finale, in which Sybil mimicked Elena’s voice to lure Damon into the Armory vault.

Season 8, Episode 11 (“You Made a Choice to Be Good”) Launch Gallery
“I reached out and said,’ We can either cobble it together from a bunch of episodes, or you can come in and see everybody and do ADR,” executive producer Julie Plec told TVLine of Dobrev’s vocal cameo. “She chose to do it in person, which was great, because it was a nice little personal Nina visit.”

Dobrev has kept herself pretty busy since bidding Mystic Falls adieu, scoring roles in movies like xXx: Return of Xander Cage and Flatliners. She’ll also guest-star in an episode of Workaholics‘ final season.

Time to theorize, TVD fans: How is this all going down (and will Bonnie have to die again in order to make it happen)?

  • Vampire Diaries: David Anders remembers Uncle John

With one season left in The Vampire Diaries’ run, we decided it was time to start collecting everyone’s final diary entries. Every week during the final season, EW is asking those involved with the show to look back on one of their favorite moments from the series. So grab your tissues and join us on this trip down a vampire-filled memory lane.

This week, David Anders remembers Uncle John…

I initially took the part because I was already friends with Ian Over-the-Shoulder-Smolderholder and the opportunity to go to Atlanta and play with my buddy sounded amazing to me. So I joined the show to play with my buddy Ian, but it turned out to be the best choice I’ve ever made as an actor because they all are my friends for life and will always be. I love them all. It was just an absolute pleasure to play vampires with them.

When I got the news that Uncle John was going to be Elena’s father, that was a bit of a shock to me seeing as how I’m only seven years older than sweet, sweet Nina [Dobrev]. They told me that news and they were like, “Whatever you do, do not tell Nina about this.” I didn’t. I was a good boy and when they finally did tell Nina that that was happening, I remember she called me at like four in the morning and somehow my phone was on and she was just like, “What the? You’re just like a spit older than me, how does that work?” And I was like, “Well, I play older, as has always been the case in my career, and you play younger, so I guess it’s going to work.” That was a fun thing to play with.

And actually, the stuff where John was being a dad to Elena, that was fun for me. It was interesting because I’d never been a father in anything I’d ever done before, though he wasn’t the ideal father by any stretch. But my whole career I’ve played villains, so that’s kind of easy for me to do, so the opportunity to play something a little different, a little lighter was a great treat for me. But even then I was still trying to kill her boyfriend.

It’s interesting because everybody hated my character until he killed himself. It was nice of them to give this much-hated character an honorable death. It was a bit unexpected. He was just finally coming into his own as a dad. He was owning his fatherhood.

I think when they offered me the role, they said it’s going to be an extensive arc. I did like 15 or 17 episodes over two seasons, which was fine by me. I remember Paul Sommers, our wonderful director of photography, was directing his first episode and he’s the one who killed me. So that process was filled with a lot of apologies. But a lot of people died that episode. It was an episode of death.

John served his purpose. I think it was time, though I was truly upset because it’s such a tight family and for the first time in my life I was acting with people who were like my same age. I wasn’t the young guy. It was like, “Hey we’re all peers here, man. Let’s all learn together!” I was sad to leave the show, but it was fun while it lasted.

I lobbied [showrunner] Julie [Plec] to bring him back. I was like, “You don’t have to pay me, just let me come back to Atlanta and play with everyone.” She’s like, “Uncle John didn’t have any supernatural powers.” I was like, “He had a ring that brought him back from the dead, that’s pretty supernatural!” She was like, “Yeah but that was just jewelry.” So I gave up on coming back to the show. What do we got, 10 episodes left? Alright, I’ve got 10 episodes to get John back in the fray.

The Vampire Diaries airs Fridays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.

  • Vampire Diaries: Malese Jow looks back on her favorite scenes as Anna

With one season left in The Vampire Diaries’ run, we decided it was time to start collecting everyone’s final diary entries. Every week during the final season, EW is asking those involved with the show to look back on one of their favorite moments from the series. So grab your tissues and join us on this trip down a vampire-filled memory lane.

This week, Malese Jow remembers Anna…

My whole experience on Vampire Diaries was a crazy rollercoaster because I initially started the show and was only supposed to be a small recurring character, so any time it would go into a different place for Anna and once she got a mom and all of that, I was blown away. She had so many facets: She got to be a badass, she got to be vulnerable, she got to have some family around. The character evolved and I didn’t know where she was going.

I definitely loved the relationship that she had with Jeremy. I feel like even though we found out she was hundreds of years old — she was this vampire who’s seen a lot of life and has gone through a lot of stuff — there was an innocence that he brought out of her that she thrived in and he did too, so their dynamic was so beautiful to me. I loved working with Steven (McQueen). We were best friends on and off set.

Something that really sticks out to me was doing the flashback episodes to 1864. That was super cool. I got to work closely with Kelly Hu (Pearl) which was amazing. We got to work on plantations and wear authentic period clothes. I also loved working with Ian (Somerhalder), too. I learned a lot from him, so any time I had scenes with him, I would be very excited about that. Ian and Paul (Wesley) and Nina (Dobrev) were definitely the captains of the ship. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to work too much with Paul and Nina so by default it was Ian, but he just has this charisma — it did something to the show, so I’m always in awe of him as an actor and as a human being in general.

When I found out Anna was going to die, it was heartbreaking. Since I was a recurring character, it was just episode to episode, so I was always on the edge of my seat. Through that I became so close with the cast and crew, so once I found out, of course everyone found out, and they were heartbroken. There was a Team Anna video that we put together. Everyone was a part of it; the fans got involved. That was a very emotional day. The crew was wrecked after the death scene, as was I. It was hard but everyone was rooting for me and for the character and it paid off! I got to see season 3.

The season 3 goodbye episode was so emotional. Anna and Jeremy had their final goodbyes and Anna finally found peace, so for that character, it was just a huge episode and it was emotionally draining, but the writing is so good so it made my job so easy. She really did get a happy ending, and I’m so glad that they brought me back and let me live her out a little bit more. I know after the initial death in the first season, there was so much backlash on Twitter from fans. I think that’s what’s so cool about this show is the writers and everyone behind the scenes were so in tune with what the fans wanted that Anna was able to have a second chance on the show and wrap things up in a nicer, happier way. I’m very thankful for that. I don’t quite know where she went, but hopefully she’s somewhere nice and very far away from Mystic Falls.

The show totally rerouted my career as an actor. I was a child actor and I was kind of at a crossroads. I was 18 at that time and I wanted to be taken more seriously and I wanted to book the right role, but those things just kind of have to be in the stars and fortunately, it was for me. It was a rollercoaster auditioning process and thankfully Kevin (Williamson) and Julie (Plec) believed in me and one thing led to another. It was supposed to be two to four episodes, and it turned out being two seasons. I met friends for life in the cast and crew and I have so much love for everyone. I’m sad that the show is ending but I’m also happy and honored to be able to say that I was a part of it.

The Vampire Diaries airs Fridays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
