Ian Somerhalder is blaming “end-of-season foggy brain” on comments he made over the weekend about next season being Vampire Diaries‘ last.
Speaking to fans of the CW drama at WalkerStalkerCon in Nashville on Sunday, Somerhalder said, “We have decided to do one last season to really do the story justice.” His statement drew a quick rebuke from The CW, which insisted “no decision has been made” about the show’s future beyond the just-ordered Season 8.
Somerhalder is now singing a similar tune. Late Wednesday, the actor released the following statement on Twitter:
Hey all, so… Last weekend I talked to an audience at a Q&A about the end of #TVD and how excited I was to make what I believe – my last year – be as great as possible. Somehow in my infinite wisdom and end-of-season foggy brain, I managed to make it sound like the show was coming to an end. Cut-to the press running stories that the show would be done after Season 8. Thing is, the people who actually make that decision (the CW and WB) haven’t made it yet! So let’s take things one step at a time: Season 7 wrap, vacation, lots of sleep, let the writers get started on Season 8, and then we’ll all see where we go from there. Until then, much love ;)Somerhalder’s initial remarks came just days after his co-star Kat Graham confirmed that, regardless of the series’ future, Bonnie Bennett only has one season left in her.
“Season 8 will be my last season,” Graham said. “I just hope that whatever I do after, the crew can come with me. … The crew is going to be the hardest thing to let go, because we are a family.”
hat’s all, folks … ? Ian Somerhalder revealed during an appearance on Sunday, April 10, that The Vampire Diaries will end after season 8.
“We have decided to do one last season to really do the story justice,” the actor, 37, who plays Damon Salvatore on the supernatural CW drama, told fans at the WalkerStalkerCon in Nashville.
Earlier this week, Kat Graham told Us Weekly exclusively that she is leaving the show after season 8.
“Season 8 will be my last season,” she said. “I just hope that whatever I do after, the crew can come with me. If the crew can come with me, then we’ll be good. The crew is going to be the hardest thing to let go, because we are a family.”
Graham, who plays witch Bonnie Bennett, added, “But you know what, another season is a whole other year, and we’re going to blow it out.”
The CW renewed the series for an eighth season in March. Although the network has yet to officially confirm that The Vampire Diaries is coming to an end, with all the changes the characters have gone through, it certainly seems like it’s time to say goodbye to Mystic Falls.
As Somerhalder told fans on Sunday, “My role is shifting in the show and we have a lot to do.”

Het plot van aflevering 7×20 Kill ‘Em All van ‘The Vampire Diaries’ is verschenen.
With Bonnie’s (Kat Graham) life at stake and an uphill battle ahead of them, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Enzo (Michael Malarkey) lead the charge to save Bonnie before her condition worsens. Stefan (Paul Wesley) reluctantly teams up with Matt (Zach Roerig) for the sake of Bonnie and uncovers the truth behind Matt’s anger towards him. Elsewhere, determined to help her best friend, Caroline (Candice King) joins Alaric (Matt Davis) on a mission and quickly realizes how much she’s missed her former supernatural lifestyle. Finally, after their plan takes an unexpected turn, Damon makes a fateful decision that will forever change his relationship with Bonnie.
Brace yourselves, Vampire Diaries lovers, because I have some difficult news to share. According to a new interview with US Weekly, Kat Graham is leaving The Vampire Diaries after Season 8 for good. And if this news makes you want to throw your hands in the air and wail like a madwoman, I don’t blame you. I basically did the same earlier when I heard the news, because Graham has been a part of this show since the pilot episode. What will Mystic Falls be like without her?
A much sadder place, that’s for sure. Graham spoke with US Weekly in detail about her decision at the iHeartRadio Music Awards on Sunday, and revealed that while the decision hasn’t been an easy one, but it’s one that is definitely set in stone. She told the magazine exclusively that, “Season 8 will be my last season. I just hope that whatever I do after, the crew can come with me. If the crew can come with me, then we’ll be good. The crew is going to be the hardest thing to let go, because we are a family.”
That doesn’t sound like the former Hannah Montana star is wavering in the least about her decision. I’m guessing whatever happens to her bewitching character Bonnie Bennett has already been decided.
But! That doesn’t mean there isn’t anything else to look forward to. In the same interview, Graham revealed that Bonnie still has some big moments ahead of her before she makes her Vampire Diaries departure. “There’s some really intense stuff with my character this season. I think the biggest episodes I’ve ever had are 20 and 21. It’s pretty major for the character — huge turns, a lot of stunts and cool sh*t!”
The episodes that Graham is talking about will air on April 29 and May 6 respectively. In other words, we still have plenty to look forward to from Bonnie throughout the rest of Season 7 and all of Season 8.
Besides, that’s an entire year away. I’m sure we’ll get plenty of Graham before she leaves the show for good.
