Candice King Says Her ‘Legacies’ Finale Appearance Was Years in the Making: ‘I Felt Right at Home’
The ”Vampire Diaries“ actress tells TheWrap all about her character Caroline Forbes’ surprise return
The CW’s “Legacies” ended on Thursday with not one, but two very special appearances from beloved characters.
Joesph Morgan’s Klaus Mikaelson spoke with his daughter Hope from the afterlife to let her know that he’d finally found peace — which showrunner Brett Matthews told TheWrap was an integral part of bringing the show to a close. Fans might have guessed that Morgan was making a return, after he cryptically teased it on social media, but they likely weren’t expecting the surprise return of Candice King as Caroline Forbes — a character from the original “The Vampire Diaries.”
“I hope that there was a whole bunch of people that actually get to watch it live and be totally surprised,” King told TheWrap. “That was the goal. We’ve been trying to have Caroline Forbes get back into the ‘Legacies’ world for a while now.”

‘Legacies’ EPs Julie Plec & Brett Matthews On Saying Goodbye For Now & Their Plans To Expand The Universe
“Annoyed” is the word Julie Plec used to describe how she’s feeling about the end of The Vampire Diaries franchise on the heels of the Legacies finale airing tonight before sharing a hearty laugh. Legacies was canceled after four seasons by the CW in mid-May as the network prepares for a sale.
Plec, who is the co-creator and executive producer of The Vampire Diaries and the creator of its two spinoffs, The Originals and Legacies, was joined by Legacies showrunner and fellow executive producer Brett Matthews for a chat with Deadline about the end of an era and their plans to expand on the franchise’s legacy someday.
RELATED STORY
‘Vampire Diaries’ Co-Creator Julie Plec Responds To Kat Graham: “The Door Will Always Be Open For Bonnie Bennett”
“I think it’s no secret that this was not the ending we expected to have,” Plec shared. “You know, in our minds, Legacies would have continued to the run-up to and beyond whenever we introduced the next chapter. The big moves in the business that are out of our control sort of wrote a different ending for us. So yeah, we’re bummed and annoyed but we also feel really, really good. Not just about the end of this with the series finale but also, between Brett and I, we’ve been involved in over 300 episodes of television. It’s something to be really proud of. We’re proud of the franchise but we’re also just a little bit irritated with the decisions that were made that put [the franchise] on pause earlier than we intended.”There was sadness in Matthews’ voice when asked how he was feeling about wrapping up Legacies tonight but he remains positive about the franchise’s future.
“[What Julie said] is the honest answer. It’s all so bittersweet,” he said. “The Vampire Diaries is so important as is The Originals and Legacies and I know more will come as more people find it. So it doesn’t really feel like a goodbye to the franchise to me but the sadness is about saying goodbye to Legacies and the people we built great relationships with. I don’t fear for the future of it, but obviously, it’s all sad because it’s something we had no control over. I’m thankful we got to do it, excited to do it again probably momentarily.”

‘Legacies’ (en Roswell, New Mexico) gecanceld door The CW
here will not be a fifth season for Legacies. The CW has canceled The Originals spinoff from Julie Plec (The Vampire Diaries), Warner Bros. TV and CBS Studios, after four seasons.
Legacies was on the bubble, but had a slight edge due to its ties to one of the CW’s signature series, The Vampire Diaries, but ultimately the CW decided not to go forward with another season as the network has been making some tough calls as it prepares for a sale. The June 16 Season 4 finale will now serve as the series finale.
A spinoff of The Originals, Legacies features characters from both series and its predecessor The Vampire Diaries. The series stars Danielle Rose Russell as 17-year-old Hope Mikaelson, descended from some of the most powerful vampire, werewolf and witch bloodlines. Set in The Salvatore Boarding School for the Young & Gifted, Legacies tells the ongoing story of a new generation of supernatural students as they learn what it means to be special in a society that wouldn’t understand their gifts.
Also not returning for the 2022-2023 broadcast season on the CW are Batwoman, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, 4400, Roswell, New Mexico, Dynasty and Charmed.
Legacies hails from Warner Bros Television and CBS Television Studios in association with My So-Called Company, with Julie Plec, Brett Matthews, Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo executive producers.

A spinoff of The Originals, Legacies features characters from both series and its predecessor The Vampire Diaries.
More familiar faces are returning to Mystic Falls this spring.
Legacies‘ April 14 episode (The CW, 9/8c) will welcome Originals stars Nathaniel Buzolic (aka Kol Mikaelson) and Charles Michael Davis (aka Marcel Gerard) for the first time. They’ll be joined by Claire Holt (Rebekah Mikaelson) and Riley Voelkel (Freya Mikaelson), both of whom have guest-starred previously.
“The Mikaelson family is welcome to visit anytime, always and forever,” showrunner Brett Matthews recently told TVLine. “It is a joy to revisit these characters and the talent who plays them. COVID makes this hard, scheduling makes this hard, and they’re all so gifted — they’re very busy. But if they can’t travel in from New Orleans, we may just have to go to them.”
So, what brings this foursome to Legacies? Here’s the official logline for the episode, titled “Everything That Can Be Lost May Also Be Found,” which may hold the answer: “Hope continues to be swirled in confusion and fighting her humanity, which results in her seeing the people who mean the most to her: Rebekah, Marcel, Kol and Freya.” Well, there you go!
Elsewhere in the hour, “Kaleb wants to introduce Cleo to his world, including those who had the most profound influence on his path. Meanwhile, Lizzie devises a plan to get in someone’s good graces.”
Additional actors from The Vampire Diaries and The Originals who have returned for Legacies include Zach Roerig (Matt), Jodi-Lyn O’Keefe (Jo), Chris Wood (Kai) and Rebecca Breeds (Aurora). Candice King (Caroline) also recorded new audio for an episode. You can see a full breakdown of actors who have crossed between shows in this list. (meer…)

Kaylee Bryant verlaat ‘Legacies’
One of the Salvatore School’s most beloved students is putting Mystic Falls in her rearview.
The Dec. 16 episode of The CW’s Legacies marked Kaylee Bryant‘s final appearance as a series regular, TVLine has learned exclusively. Bryant has portrayed Josie Saltzman since the Vampire Diaries/Originals offshoot premiered in October 2018.
“As a fan of The Vampire Diaries universe myself, thank you to The CW and Warner Bros. TV for giving me this opportunity,” Bryant says in a statement obtained by TVLine. “I am so grateful to the fans and will love them always and forever for welcoming and accepting me into this world. Josie has helped so many beautiful humans feel comfortable in their sexuality, and I hope her legacy lives on so that one day everyone feels free to love whoever they want regardless of gender.”
But is this really the last we’ll see of Josie? That answer can be found (to an extent) in the statement we obtained from executive producers Julie Plec and Brett Matthews: “While it’s heartbreaking to say goodbye to such a beloved Super Squad member, we wish Kaylee happiness and success. We look forward to watching her career grow in the future, and our door at Legacies will always be open to her, because the world is simply a better place with Josie Saltzman in it.”
Legacies Kaylee BryantWhile Bryant will be sorely missed, Josie’s storyline has been heading in this direction for quite some time. She already tried distancing herself from the Salvatore School by enrolling at Mystic Falls High, temporarily moving in with her Uncle Damon and Aunt Elena. She eventually returned to the supernatural academy, but her latest stint has been a tumultuous one.
During last week’s Grey’s Anatomy-themed vision quest, Josie came to an important realization about her future: “I have the need to live up to this school that was literally created for me, and the pressure to save the school and my friends means I will never live a life of my own.”
Josie followed that up this week by purchasing a one-way bus ticket out of town. Josie believes that there’s still good in Hope, but she can’t help her as long as she stays in a toxic environment like the Salvatore School. Unfortunately, saying goodbye to Mystic Falls also meant saying goodbye to her girlfriend. “When I come back, we can see where you and I are,” Josie told Finch after their emotional final scene together.

Legacies expands its Season Four cast with the addition of Zane Phillips, who is set to recur on the CW drama. A spinoff of The Originals, Legacies features characters from both series and its predecessor, The Vampire Diaries. In season three, Hope (Russell) has risked everything to pull her friends back from the brink of a monstrous prophecy that threatened to doom them all. But when a heartbreaking loss shatters her whole world, Hope will be forced to fight fate itself.

Rebecca Breeds krijgt terugkerende rol in ‘Legacies’
Rebecca Breeds is back to suck your blood continue her legacy!
On Thursday, Dec. 9, The Originals’ Breeds made a surprise appearance as Aurora de Martel in episode eight of the current season of The CW’s Legacies. Now E! News is excited to announce that there will be much more to come as Breeds will have a recurring role on the show.
Breeds, who we most recently saw play FBI agent Clarice Starling in CBS’ Clarice, will reprise her role as Aurora for the fourth season of the series, created and produced by Julie Plec.
Fans of The Originals will recall that the ancient vampire has a long and complicated history with the Mikaelson family. Another much-missed Mikaelson is returning to the fold. Claire Holt, who played Rebekah on both The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, will reprise her role in the Nov. 11 episode of Legacies (The CW, 9/8c).
“Hope is tracked down by the one person who could help her — Rebekah Mikaelson,” reads the episode’s official synopsis. “Rebekah is fearful of what path Hope has chosen but makes every effort to get through to her. Josie and Lizzie hold out hope in a seemingly dire situation as MG figures out what he can do to help. Meanwhile, Kaleb wants to set things right and turns to Cleo for guidance.
When TVLine spoke with Danielle Rose Russell (aka Hope) at the top of Season 4, she told us, “I’d love to have anyone who wants to come. It’s always so fun for me to revisit Hope’s roots.” And just like that, her wish is granted.
Holt is the latest member of the TVD-verse to surface in an episode of Legacies, joining a list that already includes Zach Roerig (Matt Donovan), Steven R. McQueen (Jeremy Gilbert), Riley Voelkel (Freya Mikaelson) and Jodi-Lyn O’Keefe (Josette Laughlin). ‘Legacies’ vernieuwd voor seizoen 4
‘Legacies’ is met 11 andere series vernieuwd voor een nieuw seizoen.
The Salvatore Boarding School for the Young and Gifted will stay open for the 2021-22 television season. The CW has renewed the Legacies TV show for a fourth year.
The Legacies TV show stars Danielle Rose Russell, Jenny Boyd, Kaylee Bryant, Quincy Fouse, Aria Shahghasemi, Peyton Alex Smith, Chris Lee, Leo Howard, Ben Levin, with Matthew Davis. A spin-off of The Originals (which is a spin-off of The Vampire Diaries), this show is set in the Salvatore Boarding School for the Young and Gifted in Mystic Falls, a haven for supernatural beings to learn to control their impulses and abilities. The ongoing story follows a new generation of supernatural students (like vampires, witches, and werewolves) as they learn what it means to be special in a society that wouldn’t understand their gifts. They include Hope (Russell), Lizzie (Boyd) Josie (Bryant), MG (Fouse), Rafael (Smith), Kaleb (Lee), and Landon (Shahghasemi). In season three, Hope has risked everything to pull her friends back from the brink of a monstrous prophecy that threatened to doom them all. But when a heartbreaking loss shatters her whole world, she’s forced to fight fate itself.
The third season of Legacies averages a 0.17 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 700,000 viewers. Compared to season two, that’s down by 26% in the demo and down by 8% in viewership. As live+same day ratings keep dropping for most network shows, The CW continues to focus on streaming and other revenue sources.
“Though we’re just a few weeks into the new season, we wanted to get a strategic head start on next season with these early renewals, which allows our production teams to start laying out story arcs and hiring staff, and at the same time, continues to provide us with a strong, stable schedule to build on for next season,” said Mark Pedowitz, Chairman and CEO, The CW Network.
The CW also renewed 11 other TV shows today — All American (season four), Batwoman (season three), Charmed (season four), DC’s Legends of Tomorrow (season seven), Dynasty (season five), The Flash (season eight), In the Dark (season four), Nancy Drew (season three), Riverdale (season six), Roswell, New Mexico (season four), and Walker (season two).
