Everything about Phoebe Tonkin makes us swoon; she has a blazing glare, an infectious laugh and an old soul that matches her exquisite beauty. The striking 25-year-old Australian moved out of her parents’ home when she was a teenagerand made a bold leap to the states in her early 20’s.

At 24, Tonkin did something it takes many people their whole life to do, she became comfortable in her own skin. She stopped feeling consumed about otherpeople’s thoughts, severed toxic relationships and finally started to feel grounded.

“I didn’t care so much about the men in my life or the people who had kind of let me down. I kind of just stopped giving a fuck.”

The actress and model is currently shooting the second season of The Originals in Georgia, and loves the state and the people so much she may never leave.

Like any red-blooded female, Tonkin has a love of collages, mood boards and Pinterest — which she admits to spending hours on. Ever since she was little, Tonkin has spent her “last pennies” on magazines and gathering copious amounts of visual inspiration.

“I love watching movies, I love reading books, I like to constantly be inspired by characters and people.”

While she looks to both Diane Kruger and Kate Bosworth for style tips, Tonkin says runway- model-legend and fellow Aussie, Gemma Ward is her fashion guru. Ward has an effortless way of dressing and greatly enjoys model-off-duty-style and how they combine everyday basics, with cutoff denim shorts and luxe designer items, like a Chanel top. And Phoebe’s idea of a fantastic splurge is an Isabel Marant score.

“That’s kind of where all my money goes. I’m going to be a very broke girl with a really great wardrobe.”

And a huge collection of sleepwear, might we add. Tonkin is a big fan of the slumber numbers (evidenced by her instagram feed), and manages to look amazing even in button-up PJs reminiscent of Lucy Ricardo.

“Ever since I was little I’ve always had matching set pajamas. That’s just how I sleep!”

But her all-time favorite piece of clothing won’t be spotted on any runway, or found hanging in any shop. It’s a family hand-me-down; a white, crochet “hippy” dress Tonkin has worn for years.

“It was my mom’s and ended up being in my dress-up box as a kid.”

Tonkin rediscovered it when she was 14 years old, and bleached the then-yellowed dress back to a pristine shade of white. It has traversed the globe and is with her currently in Georgia.

“It’s like the sisterhood of the traveling dress.”

When she’s not sleeping, taking long, coconut-oil soaked baths while reading Australian Vogue (her favorite way to unwind), Tonkin is often listening to a rotating set of jams, from Jack White to Purity Ring. Her all-time favorite however is seasoned rapper and producer, Eminem. She admires him as a songwriter, lyricist, poet, and is going to try and see him first-hand when he comes to Atlanta for a music festival later this year.

“He’s really influenced a lot of young kids, and there’s young kids who are now adults, and still listening to him.”

When Tonkin was a teenager, attending an all-girls high school, she put a lot of pressure on herself to be the best at everything, from water polo to music class. It’s hard to imagine the fresh-faced, stunning beauty could ever feel insecure, but she did. Although one of Tonkin’s favorite old flicks is Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, you couldn’t pay her enough to go back to her own pre-adult days.

“I didn’t love high school that much,” said Tonkin “I think everyone goes through that really awkward 11, 12, 13, 14 [year-old] stage.”

Now, Tonkin is independent and self-assured. She’s a girl who knows what she needs and many times, that need is filled with a ginger chew or a bar of chocolate.

“When I start dipping in sugar I’m a monster.”

She’s also a big fan of scented candles, Gillian Flynn (of “Gone Girl” fame), and her new musk oil that she got from Whole Foods (it’s supposed to attract members of the opposite sex). Tonkin was never into the pretty princesses of Disney movies but preferred the “darker, more evil” characters like Maleficent (she just saw the new Angelina Jolie version of the film). If she couldn’t become this fictional villain, Tonkin said she’d love to be either the Lady or the Tramp, from Lady and the Tramp.

In the meantime however, Tonkin is working on her blog, Your Zen Life, which she created with her friend. It’s a “scrapbook” of ideas about health and well-being, and includes everything from recipes for Kefir and vegan chocolate cookies, to posturing on counseling and “living in the now.”

Tonkin looks no further than Gandhi for words to live by. “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.”

“I try to be aware as much as I can of what’s going on in the world. “It starts with you and if you can influence other people to live well, than its kinda that pay it forward thing.”
