  • ‘The Lost Wife of Robert Durst’ trailer

The Jinx subject Robert Durst is once again getting the small-screen treatment in The Lost Wife of Robert Durst.

EW has the exclusive first trailer for the Lifetime original movie, which stars Daniel Gillies (The Originals) as the titular New York real estate scion and Katharine McPhee (Scorpion) as his first wife, Kathie, who went missing in 1982.

Based on journalist Matt Birkbeck’s book A Deadly Secret: The Bizarre and Chilling Story of Robert Durst, the film examines the dark and disturbing turn in the couple’s marriage and the aftermath of her still unsolved disappearance.

The Lost Wife of Robert Durst premieres Nov. 4 on Lifetime. Watch the trailer above.

  • Charles en Daniel gaan aflevering ‘The Originals’ S5 regiseren

“The Originals” actors are taking advantage of every opportunity they can in The CW drama’s final season. At least three cast members will take on directorial duties in Season 5.

While Joseph Morgan’s (Klaus) next turn in the director’s chair was announced at San Diego Comic-Con, “Originals” producer Carina MacKenzie confirmed that he isn’t the only one stepping behind the camera. Daniel Gillies (Elijah) and Charles Michael Davis (Marcel) will direct again as well. Morgan is handing episode 3, David is on episode 6 and Gillies is helming episode 10.

This isn’t the first time directing for any of them. Davis made his directorial debut last season. Morgan and Gillies had a couple directing gigs before, but they first helmed an episode of “The Originals” in Seasons 3 and 4, respectively.

When discussing his first episode as director, Gillies said that it was a little easier to jump behind the camera since he knew the show so well.

“Also, because Charles Michael Davis, Joseph Morgan and myself are so intimate with this mythology, it’s directing with training wheels, in a sense, because you don’t have to go and subject yourself to the baptism by fire of another environment, another whole show, and another mythology. So, we’re very blessed, in that sense,” the actor told Collider in June.

Not much is known about the episodes they’ll be directing, but we have a little bit of info on “The Originals” Season 5. It seems the Mikaelsons have kept their word to stay apart for Hope’s sake for nearly 10 years. Hope is a teenager now (Danielle Rose Russell will replace Summer Fontana), and her mother Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) won’t be pining for Elijah.

Hayley is moving on, and a sexy Irish chef will be her new love interest. “Reign” alum Torannce Coombs will play Declan, who doesn’t have any idea that supernatural creatures exist. Considering his relationship with Hayley is heating up, he likely won’t be in the dark for long.

That doesn’t mean all hope is lost for Hayley and Elijah’s relationship. After all, what’s 10 years when you’re an immortal being? Executive producer Julie Plec told the audience at San Diego Comic-Con that there might still be hope for these two.

“I love Hayley and Elijah and I do hope they can find peace in eternity,” Plec said. “I don’t know how quickly that will be able to happen, but it’s not something that I take lightly.”

As usual, forces of evil will make romances difficult on “The Originals.” Several new vampires will come to town in Season 5, but Margot is the one who sounds most likely to cause trouble. As previously reported, she is a “calculating” vampire who has roots in 1920s Europe. She is super dedicated to her family, so let’s hope the Mikaelsons don’t end up feuding with another vicious vampire clan.

  • ‘The Originals’ Star Tapped to Play Robert Durst in Lifetime Movie

Daniel is gecast in de rol van Robert Durst in een nieuwe film ‘The Lost Wife of Robert Durst’ van de zender Lifetime, wat gebaseerd in op een waargebeurd verhaald uit de jaren 80

Katharine McPhee will play his first wife, Kathie, who went missing in 1982.
Lifetime has found its Robert Durst.

The Originals star Daniel Gillies will play the real estate heir and suspected killer in the cable network’s upcoming movie, The Lost Wife of Robert Durst, with Katharine McPhee set to play Durst’s first wife, Kathie, who disappeared in 1982.

Based on investigative journalist Matt Birkbeck’s book A Deadly Secret: The Strange Disappearance of Kathie Durst, the movie focuses on the young and wide-eyed Kathie (McPhee), who weds the charming yet quirky real estate scion Robert Durst (Gillies) only to find their marriage becoming stranger, darker and more disturbing with time. The film dives deep into the world of Robert Durst and explores what may have happened between him and Kathie.

Lifetime has been working on a potential Durst movie since last summer when it optioned another one of Birkbeck’s books, A Deadly Secret: The Bizarre and Chilling Story of Robert Durst, a year after Durst was the subject of the acclaimed 2015 HBO docuseries The Jinx.

That series, which featured a rare interview with Durst, looked into not only the disappearance of Kathie but also the unsolved 2000 murder of Durst’s friend Susan Berman and the 2001 death of Durst’s neighbor in Texas, Morris Black.

Emmy winner Yves Simoneau (Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee) will direct from a script penned by Bettina Gilois (Bessie). Lincoln Square Productions’ Linda Berman (Madoff) and Rudy Bednar (Final Witness) will exec produce. Filming begins this month in Vancouver.

Gillies follows in the footsteps of Ryan Gosling, who portrayed a Durst-like character in the 2009 film All Good Things, with Kirsten Dunst in the role seemingly inspired by Kathie. In addition to his starring role on The Originals, Gillies’ other credits include Saving Hope and The Vampire Diaries.

McPhee, who is currently starring on CBS’ Scorpion, is also known for her roles in The House Bunny and Smash.

  • Vampire Diaries: Daniel Gillies remembers creating ’the monster in the suit’ DANIEL GILLIES

WWith one season left in The Vampire Diaries’ run, we decided it was time to start collecting everyone’s final diary entries. Every week during the final season, EW is asking those involved with the show to look back on one of their favorite moments from the series. So grab your tissues and join us on this trip down a vampire-filled memory lane.

This week, Daniel Gillies remembers his beginning as Elijah Mikaelson…

Very little was described to me in the beginning. They didn’t know what they wanted to do with Elijah. It was never anyone’s intention to make him Klaus’ brother. He was something of a mercenary or a hit man, and I think he was destined to be eliminated relatively early in the fabric of that narrative. I was very blessed in that I had a decent character and for some reason I immediately knew he was going to be around for a while, just even reading the sides. I don’t know how I knew, I just knew instinctively that there was something interesting about him. It was just one of those lucky occasions where you have a sensation of what you feel the character is and fortunately, I immediately had a grasp of what he is.

In the beginning, he was a lot more ruthless. The character vacillated in and out of that and another version of this creature, which desperately tried to recapture some degree of innocence and nobility or indeed humanity. He would go from that creature to the savage one, the monster in the suit.

They weren’t in a great rush to make him a “good guy.” They wanted him to stick around, and I think both Julie [Plec] and Kevin [Williamson] were concerned that he might not be liked if he was too villainous, but I think that was what people were sort of drawn to. Until Klaus came, they needed that energy, that great foe.

What became really difficult for us is, it became drastically simplistic to look at anyone as a good guy or a bad guy. To simplify in that way, you had to reestablish what a norm was. For example, there’s some fundamental survival essentials for a vampire: They’re cannibals and they need to consume people. Even though the audience is ostensibly protected from that behavior a lot of the time, we have to remember that no matter what you think of the Salvatore brothers or Elijah and Niklaus, especially, they’re consistently feeding on human victims. If you just take that very simple behavior into account, then immediately you can’t judge your “heroes” on a human level of morality, justice, and nobility. They’re the bad guys. So in a world of bad guys, what is another bad guy?

When Niklaus entered, it was an interesting shift. You certainly saw this history, you saw a glimpse of their past and I think that was exciting because what we really are looking at with the whole vampire motif, whenever I personally felt either show was most successful was when they talked about humanity. To me, the whole vampire motif is about humanity. You have these immortal figures but they’re actually looking at mortal lives with tremendous envy. To me, the metaphor of the vampire’s beautiful, no matter where you look for it in literature. In a way, it’s asking you to look at humanity and life as a gift.

When Niklaus entered into that sphere of the narrative, suddenly we introduced the two biggest monsters that we’d had in the tapestry of The Vampire Diaries thus far and they were dragging around with them, in a wagon behind them, this deluge of monstrosity, bloodshed, and humanity buried somewhere deep beneath that avalanche. I enjoyed any exploration of who he and Klaus were in the beginning because there was just so much gray. The very beginning was particularly enjoyable.

The most exciting thing that happened was discovering that I had a character that I wanted to fiercely protect. Elijah really made me a much better writer because I started writing ferociously for him. I have done ever since, together with the writers. The Vampire Diaries was kind of the beginning of a new way of working for me, which was that I never wanted to arrive on the set without having a really good compass and sense of direction. That’s what I look back at most fondly: I’m just so grateful that I was positioned in this role that I did love very much and I made a decision to protect with my life and I made a decision to write for. I have Elijah to thank for making me a much better writer.
